Finding Your Secret Sauce

Some people would say motivation and inspiration are synonymous. I, on the other hand, don’t believe this to be true. I believe inspiration fosters motivation.

Inspiration is Cyclical

Inspiration comes from within. It may be nurtured from an external force – a mentor, a book or even a simple act of kindness from a stranger. But at the end of the day, what inspires you comes from you.

When you are inspired, motivation is the force that pushes you to do your best. Motivation, unlike inspiration comes in waves. It is your willpower to complete an aspiration. But when the last spark of motivation shrivels away, I encourage you to dig deep and find your inspiration that stimulated your motivation in the first place. And when you do, the motivational cycle will begin again. It is these continuous cycles of motivation that will help you grow, achieve goals, and discover your true passions.

I am fortunate enough to have been inspired by my job. It took me awhile to truly understand the intricacies of a UX designer’s job and this understanding triggered my inspiration. With this newfound understanding, I am better able to define what I do each and every day.

I solve problems for people with well-designed digital products. Well-designed products are easy to use and crafted with intuition, deep thought and empathy. Good user experience design is also tested and validated by real users. It is this validation from users that keeps my motivational cycle going. And it is these continuous cycles of motivation stemmed from my inspiration that help me grow as a designer.

That’s the secret sauce: the seed of inspiration that activates motivation in each and every one of us. We have to do what we love: therefore, motivation comes easier.

Finding Your Secret Sauce

So how can you find your secret sauce? Write, reflect, play an instrument, practice yoga, sing, paint, talk to someone or do something you love, and you’ll be surprised with what happens next. When you’ve found what or who inspires you, then the motivation will kick in.

The motivation from the inspiration within yourself is your secret sauce: your magic. That is what will help you produce your best work and inspire success.
