Denver Startup Week is an annual celebration of entrepreneurship in Denver. Also, it’s one of the largest free events of the year, with speakers from a variety of different industries and places. Last year, Spire hosted two different sessions at the Spire Dojo, but this year we are going to make it three!
The Spire Dojo Denver Startup Week sessions will all take place on Monday, September 16th, from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. The schedule for these sessions can be seen below:
September 16th, 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Becky Pierson, UX Product Owner, and Alex Osterman, Product Designer
It starts with a lot of questions: Is my website accessible? If 1% of my users are blind do I need to build my site to help them? Which level of WCAG compliance should we meet? What if my brand colors don’t pass an accessible color checker? I have no idea if my site is accessible, where do I start? What is accessible design? Is accessible design important or is it just a fad? HELP!
We are here to simplify this process and hand off the research and strategies we’ve created to help companies build for everyone. We’ll discuss how to start and what to look out for when building and improving a product. As designers, we have the responsibility to design for everyone, no matter their abilities or situation. Let’s create a more accessible web, together.
September 16th, 3:00pm – 4:00pm
James Quigley, Tech Lead
Have you ever thought that you weren’t math-minded? Did you have a bad math class experience and vow to use a calculator whenever math came calling? If you have, this talk is for you. The way schools teach math is wrong. Students are forced to calculate endlessly and memorize complex equations, but they aren’t exposed to the great works of math in the world around them. I aim to correct that. RSA Encryption puts graduate-level mathematics to work keeping your data secure, but the concepts that make it possible are easy to understand. Using Game of Thrones as our guide, we will look at how RSA encryption keeps your data safe and the math that makes it possible. This talk will be accessible to learners of all levels and will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the world of math around you.
September 16th, 4:00pm – 5:00pm
David Maren, SVP of Strategy
This session has grown into an annual tradition and crowd favorite at Denver Startup Week. Previous years have focused on applying design thinking principles to a range of intractable problems, from pandemics to homelessness to discrimination. In the coming months, we’ll be applying design thinking to determine which problem(s) we’ll tackle at this year’s event. Featuring some of the top minds in both entrepreneurship and design thinking, this session will motivate, incite, and ignite. We look forward to having you take part in this unforgettable event!
September 16th, 5:00pm – 6:00pm
Head to the Spire Digital Dojo (940 Lincoln St.) for a happy hour consisting of Middle Eastern appetizers, a curated selection of local beers, and freeform discussions about what’s broken in our startup community and how it can be fixed.
We’ll see you there.
